The title of the band’s forthcoming 25th album is a nod to their iconic tongue logo by artist John Pasche. The album is slated for release on July 10. To celebrate the announcement, The Stones released two new songs from the record – “In the Stars” and “Rough and Twisted.”
The Stones recorded Foreign Tongues in less than a month at Metropolis Studios in West London. The once again worked with producer Andrew Watt, who helmed the band’s GRAMMY® Award-winning 2023 LP Hackney Diamonds. The band’s core of Mick Jagger, Keith Richard, and Ronnie Wood are joined by longtime collaborators Steve Jordan, Darryl Jones, and Matt Clifford. The album features a couple high-profile special guests, including Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, Robert Smith (The Cure), and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers).
Also, Stones drummer Charlie Watts makes a posthumous appearance on the album, with drum parts taken from one of his final recording sessions before his passing in 2021.
The Stones’ last effort Hackney Diamonds was their first album without founding drummer Charlie Watts who passed away at 80 in August of 2021. During a live-streaming event hosted by The Tonight Show‘s Jimmy Fallon, the band revealed that two tracks on the album – “Mess It Up” and “Live by the Sword” – were recorded in 2019 with Watts on drums.
“Ever since Charlie’s gone, it’s different,” guitarist Keith Richards said during the event. “He’s ‘Number Four.’”
