It is the band’s first song to sell over 10 million copies
System of a Down have achieved a massive career milestone. Ahead of the 25th anniversary of their landmark album Toxicity, the album’s lead single “Chop Suey!” has been certified Diamond by the RIAA. The song has sold over 10 million copies since it’s release, becoming the band’s definitive track.
The song stands as one of the defining heavy-rock songs of the early 2000s and, more than 25 years after its arrival, remains the most successful and recognizable song of the band’s career. Released on August 13, 2001, as the lead single from the group’s second studio album, Toxicity, the song provided the first major glimpse of the dramatically expanded sound System of a Down had developed with producer Rick Rubin. Written primarily by guitarist Daron Malakian, with lyrics credited to Malakian and vocalist Serj Tankian, “Chop Suey!” combined frantic metal riffing, abrupt rhythmic changes, Armenian and Middle Eastern musical influences, melodic passages and an enormous, almost hymn-like climax. The track was originally known as “Suicide,” but the title was changed before release, reportedly because the label was uncomfortable marketing a single under that name. The eventual title “Chop Suey!” played off the idea of chopping or dividing the word “suicide,” while also fitting the song’s wildly contrasting musical sections. Released through American Recordings and Columbia Records, it became the first single from Toxicity, which arrived just weeks later in September 2001.
The song’s timing proved both fortunate and complicated. “Chop Suey!” was already gaining momentum at rock radio when the September 11 terrorist attacks occurred less than a month after its release. Its references to death, suicide and the biblical line “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit” made some programmers wary in the tense atmosphere following the attacks, yet the controversy did little to prevent the song from becoming System of a Down’s mainstream breakthrough. Its accompanying music video, directed by Marcos Siega and featuring the band performing before a packed crowd in a Los Angeles hotel parking lot, became an essential part of its popularity, receiving extensive television exposure and introducing millions of listeners to Tankian’s distinctive vocals and the group’s unconventional visual identity. The single also helped propel Toxicity to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, transforming System of a Down from a respected cult metal act into one of the biggest heavy bands of its generation. “Chop Suey!” subsequently earned the group its first Grammy Award nomination, competing for Best Metal Performance at the 2002 ceremony.
Despite becoming a massive rock anthem, “Chop Suey!” was not initially a conventional pop-chart blockbuster in the United States. It peaked at No. 76 on the Billboard Hot 100 while performing substantially better within rock and alternative formats, reaching No. 7 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart. Internationally, its commercial showing was stronger. In the United Kingdom it reached No. 17 on the Official Singles Chart, making it System of a Down’s highest-charting UK single; by comparison, “Toxicity” later peaked at No. 25 and “Aerials” at No. 34. “Chop Suey!” also reached No. 14 in Australia and became a significant hit in several other territories. Its UK performance was particularly impressive for such an aggressive and unconventional song: it spent six weeks in the UK Top 100 and reached No. 3 on the country’s Official Rock & Metal Singles Chart.
What separated “Chop Suey!” from most of the nu-metal and alternative-metal singles surrounding it was its refusal to follow a predictable structure. The song races from Malakian’s instantly recognizable acoustic-guitar introduction into furious distorted riffs and Tankian’s rapid-fire vocals before suddenly collapsing into quieter melodic passages. Its closing section then grows into one of the most recognizable climaxes in 21st-century metal, with Tankian and Malakian trading and layering vocals over increasingly dramatic instrumentation. The lyrics revolve around death, judgment and the different ways society perceives people depending upon how they die. That combination of musical chaos and surprisingly serious subject matter helped distinguish System of a Down from many of the bands with which they were grouped during the nu-metal era. Rather than simply becoming a successful radio single, “Chop Suey!” established the group’s identity for a worldwide audience.
Its long-term performance has ultimately dwarfed its original chart showing. In November 2020, the official “Chop Suey!” music video surpassed one billion views on YouTube, becoming the first System of a Down video to reach that milestone. In April 2023, the song passed one billion streams on Spotify as well, giving the band another indication of how dramatically the track had endured beyond its original release cycle. By late August 2026, third-party Spotify tracking data placed “Chop Suey!” at more than 2.1 billion Spotify streams, comfortably ahead of “Toxicity” at roughly 1.62 billion, “Lonely Day” at about 1.10 billion and “Aerials” at just over one billion. Those numbers are especially remarkable considering the song was released years before streaming services became the primary way audiences consumed music.
“Chop Suey!” can therefore reasonably be considered System of a Down’s most successful song overall, even though other singles surpassed it in particular categories. “Aerials,” for example, reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart, while “B.Y.O.B.” earned the band a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2006. But neither has matched the combination of longevity, streaming totals, video views, international chart performance and cultural recognition achieved by “Chop Suey!” Official Charts records also show that it remains the band’s highest-charting conventional UK single. Its appeal has crossed generations as younger listeners have discovered System of a Down through streaming, social media and online video, turning a song that initially seemed almost too strange for mainstream radio into an enduring piece of popular music.
More importantly, “Chop Suey!” became the song most closely associated with System of a Down themselves. It helped make Toxicity the band’s breakthrough album, demonstrated that highly unconventional heavy music could reach a mass audience, and provided one of the most memorable rock singles of its era. The song’s shifts between aggression, melody, absurdity and genuine emotional weight captured virtually every element that made System of a Down unique. What began in 2001 as an unusual lead single from a rising alternative-metal band ultimately became their signature recording—a song whose commercial life has continued for decades and whose enormous streaming and video audiences now far exceed anything that could have been measured during its original release. For all of System of a Down’s acclaimed material, “Chop Suey!” remains the track that defines their career for the broadest audience and one of the most enduring heavy-music songs of the 21st century.
