Green Day formed in 1986 in Berkeley, California, by Billie Joe Armstrong (lead vocals, guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass), and later Tré Cool (drums). Initially part of the underground punk scene, the trio gained mainstream fame with their 1994 major-label debut Dookie, a breakout success that sold over 20 million copies worldwide and helped revive punk rock’s popularity in the U.S. over the 1990s and beyond. Over their career, Green Day has released 14 studio albums and built a catalog of hit singles such as “Basket Case,” “When I Come Around,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” blending catchy melodies with punk energy.
Commercially, Green Day is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with around 75 million records sold worldwide as of 2024, including more than 26 million certified albums sold in the United States. Albums like American Idiot further cemented their global impact, topping the Billboard 200 and selling millions of copies with multiple hit singles that crossed rock and pop radio formats. Over the decades, the band has consistently charted internationally, with numerous albums and singles appearing on Billboard charts, and they are recognized for their enduring influence on both alternative and punk rock scenes.
Green Day’s work has garnered critical acclaim and major awards, including five Grammy Awards—such as Best Alternative Album for Dookie, Best Rock Album for American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, and Record of the Year for “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” Their rock opera American Idiot also inspired a Broadway musical adaptation, broadening their cultural footprint, and the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015. In 2025 they received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, underscoring their lasting legacy in rock music worldwide.
