Manowar emerged in 1980 in Auburn, New York, founded by bassist and driving force Joey DeMaio (previously a bass tech and fireworks manager on the Black Sabbath “Heaven & Hell” tour) together with guitarist Ross the Boss (Ross Friedman), and vocalist Eric Adams (real name Louis Marullo). From the outset their mission was unabashed: to create epic, thunderous heavy metal that embraced mythology, sword-and-sorcery imagery, warrior themes and a bravado-laden “true metal” identity.
From their debut album Battle Hymns (1982) onward, Manowar built a reputation for profile-raising theatrics (including recording narration by the legendary Orson Welles on the original “Dark Avenger”) and for breaking records in volume and endurance (they claimed the loudest concert, and one of the longest—five hours and one minute in Bulgaria in 2008). As their discography grew through landmark albums such as Into Glory Ride (1983), Hail to England (1984), Sign of the Hammer (1984), Fighting the World (1987) and Kings of Metal (1988), their mythic vision of heavy metal resonated especially in Europe, where the band’s following has always been especially strong.
Line-up changes have been frequent over the decades, but the core of DeMaio (bass, key songwriting, sometimes keyboards) and Adams (vocals) has remained constant. The band’s line-up consists of Joey DeMaio – bass (1980–present), Eric Adams – vocals (1980–present), Michael Angelo Batio – guitars (joined around 2022-2023), and Dave Chedrick – drums (joined in 2022).
In recent years Manowar has remained active on the touring front despite the advancing ages of its founders, reaffirming their commitment to the “metal warrior” ethos. In July 2025, the band played a show at London’s O2 Academy Brixton as part of their ongoing European touring cycle, and reviews of the show praised how well Adams’ vocals held up at age 73 and how the band delivered a forceful set re-affirming their status. Their most recent major public tour effort is the “The Blood of Our Enemies Tour 2025”, which included dates in Germany, Iceland, Estonia and Spain.
They have also signalled that work is underway toward a new studio album, described by DeMaio in mid-2025 as “heavy, brutal … everything you’d expect from Manowar.” Thus, at more than four decades into their career, Manowar continues to blend nostalgic reverence for their early “true metal” image with current-day activity, both in live performance and in preparation for new material.
Manowar’s long career is one of unwavering devotion to a particular heavy-metal vision: from their inception drawing on myth, fire-brand riffs and warrior imagery; through a succession of albums that helped define power and epic metal; through personnel shifts and business autonomy (including the founding of their own label, Magic Circle Music; and into the present where they still tour, still declare loyalty to their fans, and still look ahead to fresh creative output. Their hallmark remains loud, proud, unabashed heavy metal.
