Peter Gabriel has released a brand new song – the Dark-Side Mix of “The Court” on Sunday, on the second full moon of 2023. The track is the second taste of his forthcoming album i/o, the long-awaited follow up to 2002’s Up. Written and produced by Peter, “The Court” was recorded at Real World Studios in Wiltshire and in London at The Beehive and British Grove.

Peter was inspired by the work of Namati, whose mission is to provide people around the world access to justice they may not otherwise be able to afford. ‘I had this idea for ‘the court will rise’ chorus, so it became a free-form, impressionistic lyric that connected to justice, but there’s a sense of urgency there. A lot of life is a struggle between order and chaos and in some senses the justice or legal system is something that we impose to try and bring some element of order to the chaos. That’s often abused, it’s often unfair and discriminatory but at the same time it’s probably an essential part of a civilised society.’

The track is accompanied by a cover image featuring the work ‘The Burning of Lifting the Curse, 2022’ by artist and sculptor Tim Shaw.

This spring, Gabriel is returning to the road. The i/o Tour will see Gabriel perform across the UK & Europe. The trek marks his first shows outside of North America since 2014’s Back to Front Tour celebrating the era-defining album So. The 22-date run in Europe will kick off in Krakow, Poland on 18 May 2023, with dates in Italy, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, and the UK. The trek wraps up in Dublin, Ireland on 25 June 2023.

“It’s been a while and I am now surrounded by a whole lot of new songs and am excited to be taking them out on the road for a spin. Look forward to seeing you out there,” Gabriel said.

A North American leg is set to be announce soon for late summer or early fall.
