We’re not really sure what’s going on here

Grammy Awards 2023
GRAMMY® Awards 2023 [Recording Academy]

The 2023 GRAMMY® Award Nominees have been announced, and as usual, we’re not quite sure what the fuck is going on. First off, Ozzy Osbourne is nominated for both Best Rock and Best Metal Performances…for two songs, respectively, from the same album. The same goes for Turnstile. While Muse’s new album Will of the People is some of their heavier work, they still might be better suited for the Rock or Alternative categories – not metal.

And speaking of metal – Lamb of God’s bruising track “Nevermore” definitely deserved a nod.

Perhaps the most bizarre nomination this year is Ghost’s “Call Me Little Sunshine” for Best Metal Performance. The problem isn’t Ghost being nominated, or the fact that it’s in the Metal category instead of Rock. The issue is the song the Academy nominated isn’t even the best track from the album (Impera). Songs like “Kaisarion” and “Watcher In The Sky” are absolutely dominant tracks and are some of the finest moment’s of the band’s career. While we’re on the subject, the fact that Impera isn’t nominated for Best Rock Album may be an even bigger travesty.

We’re not quite sure how the “Academy” makes its selections. They certainly aren’t listening (or perhaps they just have the wrong people listening). Maybe they just throw darts at a wall full of album covers? Who the fuck knows.

What we do know is we need a rock awards show.

On the bright side, classic rock icon Bryan Adams nabbed his first nomination in over two decades. The “Run To You” singer, 63, won a GRAMMY® in 1992 for his hit single “Everything I Do (I Do It For You).” His last nomination came in 1998.

Rising stars Måneskin and Wet Leg are up for Best New Artist.

Other notable nominees include The Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Megadeth, Arctic Monkeys, Florence + The Machine, and Bonnie Raitt.

The GRAMMY® Awards are set for February 5, 2023 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Fans can tune in to watch the ceremony on CBS or stream it on Paramount+, although the Rock and Metal categories probably won’t even be show. Check out the full list of nominees below.
