During a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, Kate Hudson covered “Vasoline” by Stone Temple Pilots. The Oscar-nominated actress and her band appeared on the show to promoter forthcoming debut album, Glorious. While the played the song flawlessly, the performance was not planned.

“I was told that when you soundchecked for Kate’s performance today, you sound checked with Stone Temple Pilots’ ‘Vasoline,’ Stern inquired. “Oh, yeah,” Hudson replied. Then, Howard asked, “Can you guys just show me how you soundcheck?”

While Stern was perhaps expecting just a quick snippet, Kate and company proceeded to play the entire song. The group’s jazzy version was highlight by Hudson’s velvety voice and a saxophone solo. Check out the official video of the performance below.

When the finished the song, Stern exclaimed, “How fun was that?”

“So fun,” Hudson replied.

Stern continued, “Because, you weren’t prepared to do that,” prompting Kate to simply reply, “No,” with a smile.

Kate Hudson is releasing her debut studio album, Glorious, on May 17 through Virgin Music. She collaborated with Danny Fujikawa, Johan Carlsson, and Linda Perry while recording 12-song collection independently. Recently, she revealed the guitar-driven single, “Gonna Find Out.”

“I’d say it doesn’t seem real,” Kate says of the record finally coming to fruition. “But the truth is, this is realer to me than anything I’ve done in my entire life. It was always this, I just needed to get to a place where I was ready, and the songs got to the core of who I am.”

She adds, “When it comes to talking about where this album comes from, the years I’ve spent quietly making music and living inside the songs, I’m not sure I’ll be able to stop talking about it. I’m just thrilled so many smart people want to talk to me about Glorious – and the process of making my first record. I wanted something that was sexy and delicious, vulnerable and strong, willing and fearless – and especially gloriously in love with the way life takes you on this journey if you’ll just show up and be open. I wanted songs that could reach across all that, and that is a lot to cover.”

The forthcoming album will be available digitally, and physical versions include CD, standard black vinyl, and a limited edition dark teal colored vinyl that includes a special card personally signed by Kate herself. Check out the album cover art, track listing, and physical versions below. On May 18, Kate will be celebrating Glorious with a record release show at Bellwether in Los Angeles, California – a 1,500 capacity independent tastemaker room.

For Kate Hudson – songwriter, singer, doyenne, diva – this is a moment that’s a lifetime in the making. But it’s also her raison d’etre, long before anyone knew that she wrote, sang or delivered live with a band. A woman who understands the drama and nuance of eroticism, the quest for love and the need for human bonding, Glorious opens a dimension into how we face life and creates the kinds of songs that you can sing, dance or listen to after a long day when you just want someone to understand.
