Rock Icon Tom Petty Dead At 66

(TRR) – Rock music icon Tom Petty died Monday at the age of 66. Petty, frontman for his legendary group Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, was rushed to the hospital Sunday night. He was found unconscious after a full cardiac arrest in his Malibu home. Petty was taken off of life support this afternoon at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital, per reports.

Tom Petty played his final show last Monday – the last of three sold-out shows which wrapped up the band’s 40th anniversary tour. Speaking with Rolling Stone last December, Petty hinted that the group would not be taking on large-scale tours anymore. “It’s very likely we’ll keep playing, but will we take on 50 shows in one tour? I don’t think so. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was thinking this might be the last big one. We’re all on the backside of our sixties. I have a granddaughter now I’d like to see as much as I can. I don’t want to spend my life on the road. This tour will take me away for four months. With a little kid, that’s a lot of time.”

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers debuted in 1976 with their self-titled LP. Just three years later, they released Damn The Torpedoes which stands as arguably the band’s best overall effort. Throughout their career, the band has sold over 80 million records worldwide and produced some of the greatest classic rock anthems of all-time including “American Girl,” “Free Fallin’,” “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” “Breakdown,” “Refugee,” “Runnin’ Down A Dream,” “Don’t Do Me Like That,” and many more. In 2002, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their last studio album, 2014’s Hypnotic Eye, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and Billboard Top Rock Albums. In addition to fronting The Heartbreakers, Petty released three solo albums during his career.
