“Our only goal is to get lost in the music,” the band said in a statement. “We (John, Anthony, Chad and Flea) spent thousands of hours, collectively and individually, honing our craft and showing up for one another, to make the best album we could. Our antennae attuned to the divine cosmos, we were just so damn grateful for the opportunity to be in a room together, and, once again, try to get better. Days, weeks and months spent listening to each other, composing, jamming freely, and arranging the fruit of those jams with great care and purpose. The sounds, rhythms, vibrations, words and melodies had us enrapt.
We yearn to shine a light in the world, to uplift, connect, and bring people together. Each of the songs on our new album UNLIMITED LOVE, is a facet of us, reflecting our view of the universe. This is our life’s mission. We work, focus, and prepare, so that when the biggest wave comes, we are ready to ride it. The ocean has gifted us a mighty wave and this record is the ride that is the sum of our lives. Thank you for listening, we hope you enjoy it. ROCK OUT MOTHERFUCKERS!”
The new album is the band’s first with guitarist John Frusciante since 2016’s Stadium Arcadium.
“When we got together to start writing material, we began by playing old songs by people like Johnny “Guitar” Watson, The Kinks, The New York Dolls, Richard Barrett and others,” Frusciante said. “Ever so gradually, we started bringing in new ideas, and turning jams into songs, and after a couple of months the new stuff was all we were playing. The feeling of effortless fun we had when we were playing songs by other people, stayed with us the whole time we were writing. For me, this record represents our love for, and faith in each other.”
In an exclusive interview with The Rock Revival last May, drummer Chad Smith revealed that the band was working on their 12th studio outing.
“We’re making our record. And when it’s done, which should be…I don’t know when. I’ll get in trouble if I say, ‘It’s going to be done then.’”
This summer, the band will embark on a massive stadium tour around the globe. The will be accompanied by a plethora of special guests including Beck, The Strokes, St. Vincent, HAIM, A$AP Rocky, Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, Thundercat, and King Princess on select dates. Tickets are on sale now via RedHotChiliPeppers.com.
Red Hot Chili Peppers parted ways with guitarist Josh Klinghoffer back in December of 2019. Shortly after, they reunited with Frusciante. A few months later, the Chili Peppers performed with Frusciante at the Tony Hawk Foundation’s memorial concert for Andrew Burkle.
John Frusciante was a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for their 1989 outing Mother’s Milk and their seminal 1991 album Blood Sugar Sex Magik, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. He left the group but would return in 1998 to play on Californication, By The Way, and Stadium Arcadium, before exiting again in 2009.
Red Hot Chili Peppers last album The Getaway was released in 2016. It was their first time working with producer Danger Mouse after working with Rick Rubin on their previous six LPs. The album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and No. 1 on the Billboard Top Rock and Top Alternative Albums charts.
To date, the Chili Peppers have sold 80 million albums worldwide. Their music has earned them six GRAMMY® Awards throughout their career. In 2012, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
