Nine Inch Nails on an Upward Spiral to Reunion in 2013

NIN Live 1And finally, Nine Inch Nails are back. This is a statement I’ve been waiting to make for 4 years now. Today, frontman Trent Reznor announced that industrial rock legends Nine Inch Nails will return to the fold in 2013 with new music and extensive touring. The band have already planned tour runs for this summer and fall, extending deep into 2014. This NIN lineup will be Trent Reznor, Eric Avery (Jane’s Addiction), Adrian Belew (King Crimson), and Josh Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv), as well as previous NIN collaborators Alessandro Cortini and Ilan Rubin. This morning, Reznor released the following note:

Nine Inch Nails are touring this year.

I was working with Adrian Belew on some musical ideas, which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to re-think the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be, and the idea of playing a show. Calls were made to some friends, lots of new ideas were discussed, and a show was booked – which led to another, which somehow led to a lot of shows.

The band is reinventing itself from scratch and will be comprised of Eric Avery, Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Eustis, Ilan Rubin, and me. The first shows will begin this summer, followed by a full-on arena tour of the US this fall, and lots of other dates worldwide to follow through 2014.

Lots of details and dates to come. See you soon.

During NIИ‘s hiatus, Reznor certainly kept himself busy. He composed the scores for two major films – The Social Network and GirlTrent Reznor Studio With The Dragon Tattoo – as well as the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Reznor also formed a side project, How To Destroy Angels, with his wife, Mariqueen Maandig, Rob Sheridan, and Atticus Ross. The band released The Omen EP last November, and are set to drop their debut album, Welcome Oblivion, March 5 via Columbia Records. “It’s really been an unexpected, weird ride,” Reznor told Rolling Stone Magazine in an interview last November. “I’m grateful to have the opportunity to work. I’m just trying to approach things with integrity and try to find things that are interesting to me.” Reznor won an Oscar for Best Original Score for The Social Network in 2010.

NIN Live 3Nine Inch Nails are undoubtedly one of the greatest artists of all time. Pioneers of the industrial genre, they incorporated elements of rock, metal, electronica, and alternative rock to forge a style all their own. They shook the music world to it’s core in 1989 with their debut album, Pretty Hate MachineThe record was truly groundbreaking, and has since gone on to be certified multi-platinum. In 1994, NIИ set the bar once again with their sophomore effort, The Downward Spiral, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard Top 200. The disc went on to sell over 5 million copies, and be certified quadruple-platinum. It spawned NIИ’s finest moment, the single Closer. The band’s third album was a monster double disc outing titled The Fragile, released in 1999. The album saw NIИ expanding their trademark sound, and once again the band debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200. From 2005-2008, the band released four more studio LP’s. Throughout their entire career, Nine Inch Nails were famous for their EPs, single releases, and remix albums. They have released approximately two-dozen since their inception. Every NIИ record is categorized with the word “Halo” followed by a number. – by Matt Bishop
