The GRAMMY® Award winner makes a triumphant return to the stage
John Mayer is back on the road for his first run of live performances since 2019. The GRAMMY® Award-winning songwriter and guitar virtuoso has returned with his new album Sob Rock. The record hit No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums Chart. Now, he’s performing the new songs in front of audiences for the first time, as well as some other classic hits.
While the album title may be a bit melancholy, Mayer’s Sob Rock tour is anything but sad.
He kicked off the evening’s festivities with “Last Train Home,” one of the five singles from his latest LP. Then, Mayer reached way back to his 2006 outing Continuum for “Belief.” From there, the set was a roller-coaster ride through his catalog.
Gorgeous renditions of “Love on the Weekend” and the fan-favorite “Who Says” had fans singing along.
“You know, when the line comes along [in “Who Says”] about Austin, I usually change it to whatever city we’re playing in,” Mayer said after the song finished. Apparently, a fan had the word “haircut” displayed across the screen of their cell phone to voice their wish for him to trim his unusually long locks.
“I’m getting a haircut tomorrow,” he chuckled.
Mayer did a great job of showcasing his new album, playing just over half of the record’s songs. Other highlights included “New Light,” “Wild Blue,” “Still Feel Like Your Man,” “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room,” and many more.
Before performing his breakout hit “You’re Body Is a Wonderland,” Mayer stated, “Sometimes we have to give this one the full band treatment.”
He wrapped things up with his seminal hit “Waiting on the World to Change.”
Mayer and his Uber-talented band returned for a two-track encore. They started off with the nostalgia-inducing “Dear Marie.” While no one was full-on sobbing, the sweeping outro certainly made a few eyes a bit misty.
The evening came to a close with the hit song “Gravity.”
John Mayer has emerged as a GRAMMY® Award-winning artist, celebrated songwriter, and iconic guitar player all at once. The Bridgeport, CT native introduced himself on the quintuple-platinum Room For Squares in 2001 and has earned three #1 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 with the triple-platinum Heavier Things (2003), double-platinum Battle Studies (2009), and gold Born and Raised (2012).
In addition to selling over 20 million albums worldwide and gathering billions of streams to date, he has garnered seven GRAMMY® Awards, including “Song of the Year” for “Daughters,” and has earned a record seven U.S. No. 1s on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart and 25 entries on the Hot Rock Songs chart, the most for any solo artist. In 2015, Dead & Company was founded, with Mayer on lead guitar as well as vocals. Since its formation, the band has completed six tours, playing to 3.4 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act.
The The Sob Rock Tour rolls on through April 28, wrapping up at the United Center in Chicago.
