South Carolina alternative rockers NEEDTOBREATHE are set to kick off their 2013 Drive All Night Tour next week. Nearly 7 years after the release of their debut album, the 5-month trek kicks off in Memphis, TN on April 2, and runs cross-country through August. The band is still touring off their latest album, The Reckoning. Released back in September 2011, the record hit #6 on the Billboard Top 200.
NEEDTOBREATHE caught the eye of Atlantic Records back in 2005. After signing with the label, the band headed off to the U.K. to record their debut LP with producer Andy Green. The album, Daylight, was released in April 2006. Just before the album’s release, the band graced the cover of CCM Magazine (Contemporary Christian Music). After just a few months of touring, the band returned to the studio to record their sophomore effort, 2007’s The Heat. The album debuted at #164 on the Billboard Top 200, the band’s first time cracking the chart. In 2008, NEEDTOBREATHE was nominated for two awards at the 39th Annual GMA Dove Awards. Their song “Signature of Divine (Yahweh)” received a nomination for Rock/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year, and their album The Heat was nominated for Rock/Contemporary Album of the Year.
In 2009, their song “Washed by the Water” was nominated and won the Dove Award for Rock/Contemporary Song of the Year at the 40th Annual GMA Dove Awards. That same year, the band returned to the studio and released their third album, The Outsiders, in August. A huge improvement commercially, the disc debuted at #20 on the Billboard Top 200 and #2 on Christian Albums Chart. The album produced two Top 10 Christian Singles, and the song “Hurricane” peaked at #29 on the Alternative Singles Chart, giving the band their first mainstream radio hit. After two years of touring, the band entered the studio again and released their fourth LP, The Reckoning, which gave the band their first Top 10 Billboard hit, debuting at #6 on the Billboard Top 200. The album’s first single, “Slumber”, peaked at #26 on the Christian Rock Chart. The second single, “Drive All Night”, spawned the name for the band’s spring/summer tour that kicks off next week. In addition to this upcoming tour, NEEDTOBREATHE are currently working on new music, and hopefully fans will see a new LP sometime in late 2013 or early 2014. – by Matt Bishop
