Metallica Play Ride The Lightning In Full + More on Night 1 of Orion Festival
Metallica cranked it up and got things off to a running start on the first night of Orion Music + More Festival in Atlantic City, NJ. The day included top notch performances by acts of all genres including Arctic Monkeys, Modest Mouse, Black Tusk, Cage The Elephant, The Gaslight Anthem, The Sword, Suicidal Tendencies, Kyng, Red Fang, and MORE. Black Tusk kicked off the festivities with their fresh, self-named brand of swamp metal. Towards the end of the day, Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo joined his former bandmates in Suicidal Tendencies for a reunion song. The Hot Snakes, a personal favorite of Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, added a kick-ass, well-received set on the Frantic Stage.
Metallica played their classic masterpiece Ride The Lightning in it’s entirety for the first time ever, with some of the songs being played for the first time on U.S. soil. In addition, the band opened with hits from the vault including “Hit The Lights,” “The Four Horsemen,” and “Master of Puppets.” After strapping the crowd into the electric chair, the band played another mini-hits set, with an epic encore of “Battery,” “One,” and “Seek and Destroy” – which frontman James Hetfield dedicated to Metallica’s founding bass player, the late and greatly missed Cliff Burton.
Day Two kicks off tomorrow with performances from Liturgy, The Black Angels, A Place To Bury Strangers, and Ghost. Ghost are fresh off a win for Best Breakthrough Band at the 2012 Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards. The day will conclude with Volbeat, Eric Church, Avenged Sevenfold, and Metallica once again.
