The Aerosmith axman is showing no signs of slowing down
There are few rockstars on the planet, if any, that are cooler than Joe Perry. The guitar god is responsible for some of the most iconic riffs in rock history. Now, he’s back on the road for string of solo tour dates, treating fans to an intimate experience until Aerosmith picks up their Sin City residency again on September 14.
Last night, The Joe Perry Project wrapped up a brief three-show run at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, NJ.
With a custom guitar slung over his shoulder, Perry sauntered onto the stage and the band ripped right into “Let The Music Do The Talking.” It was clear what the evening was all about. Next, Perry dusted off one of Aerosmith’s heaviest and most underrated tracks, “Toys In The Attic,” from the band’s watershed album of the same name. Then, fans were taken all the way back with a deep cut from Aerosmith’s very first outing, “Walkin’ The Dog.”
Other Aerosmith highlights included “Same Old Song and Dance,” “Chip Away The Stone,” and “Walk This Way.” The song selection was an extra-special treat for the crowd. Because of Aerosmith’s seemingly endless catalog of hits, it’s rare the nowadays that the tracks Perry performed last night would make it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band’s set (aside from the staple “Walk This Way”). It was a great way for the fans to hear these tunes in an intimate setting.
Perry is slated to release a new album Sweetzerland Manifesto MKII on vinyl later this year. He took the opportunity at these solo outings to debut two new songs from the record – “Quake” and “Fortunate One.” The tracks received a favorable reaction from the crowd, and serve as a promising preview of his forthcoming LP.
Missing from the set sadly were “I’ve Got The Rock ‘N’ Rolls Again,” “Discount Dogs,” and the blues-tinged rocker “Shakin’ My Cage” from Perry’s 2005 self-titles solo effort. But, hey, there’s always next time. Hopefully Perry will fill up some more of his free time with additional Joey Perry Project shows.
The Joe Perry Project came back with a furious jam of “Train Kept a Rollin'” for the encore.
At 71, Joe Perry is still performing with the same swagger and grit he did some five decades ago. It’s very cool that he still has the passion to play his solo stuff in an intimate setting at this point in the game. Fans are surely hoping that this icon sprinkles in some more solo outings around his Aerosmith commitments in the near future.
In September, Aerosmith have shows scheduled at the Maine Savings Amphitheater in Bangor, ME on September 4 and Fenway Park in Boston, MA on September 8.
“We are gearing up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band and will definitely have some incredible forgotten treasures for our fans that we found deep-diving into the vaults and there’s a lot more to come,” the band said in a statement. “On the live side, we can’t wait to get back on the stage together! We have a special date in Maine in September and our big 50th anniversary show at home at Fenway [Boston] before we head back to Vegas for the two residencies.”
